Can anyone help Malan with Subaru STi Performance Parts?

Email received from SubaruBlog.co.za reader, Malan Strydom:

“Hi guys!

I am on the lookout for SPT (Subaru Performance Tuning) parts!

I have called just about all the Subaru wizards like TRB and NXGEN, but they either don’t respond or want to sell me some other stuff (Injen ect.).

I have two questions about SPT parts that not even my dealer could help me with:

1. Seeing as SPT parts are genuine Subaru parts, with Subaru part numbers, would fitting these performance parts (by a dealer) void my warranty or service plan?
2. What can I find them?

The parts on my list include an SPT High Flow Air Intake, SPT Intake Heat Shield & SPT 6spd Short Shift kit.

The reason why I want these parts is because I am fortunate enough (at 23) to own a 2007 (bought new in Feb 2008) Impreza STi, the car is still under warranty and service plan. I value the quality and integrity of my STi, and I don’t want to compromise it by adding inferior aftermarket parts.

I am extremely passionate about Subaru, and I am sure we share the interest. If so, please make an effort to help me find answers or the people that could give me the answers…

Thank you in advance, I am eagerly awaiting your reply.”

Anyone who can help Malan, please submit a comment below! SubaruBlog.co.za welcomes article submissions and letters such as this one; simply email us!

    Hello again guys,

Thank you for helping me out! Since I have started my quest for SPT parts, I have made some discoveries; I think it could be valuable information for other Subaru fans.

Craig Reichman from NXGEN has been a great help thus far (phone line difficulties - hence no immediate initial response), if anyone needs performance parts other than SPT, he’s your new best friend, HKS, APS & loads more @ unbelievable prices…
Robert Hillary from Subaru South Africa helped me out on the warranty and service plan issue, he said the following: “All parts fitted by the dealer which come from Subaru Southern Africa will not compromise your service or warranty.”

There you have it. If you want to fit some neat performance parts to your Scooby, but are governed by the service plan or warranty, SPT is surely the way to go. Here is a link to the SPT website, go check out what I’m on about!
    http://www.subaru.com/microsites/spt/home.sptmain

SPT parts are supposed to be available through your local Subaru dealer, unfortunately stock seems to be a problem. However, Robert (SSA) assured me that I could order the parts I needed directly though the dealership. Apparently, SSA is all out of stock all together, thus my quest continues…

Still, any help with locating readily available SPT parts would be wonderful!

    Safe driving, have fun!

  2. STI parts are sold by SSA as authorised tuning parts for your car. These parts are sold at huge markup and are the only tuning parts that can be install on a STI that will not void your warranty.

The same part ordered via the internet is cheaper.

The other option is Prodrive manufactured parts sold by SSA.

But you won’t find any engine performance increasing parts from SSA.

SPT are parts designed in the USA for the US market. The US market cars are different in spec to the local RSA market cars. Some of the parts may fit. But they may not work as advertised.

  3. Hi Guys

I managed to stumble onto this site by chance and read Malans request.

To clarify the matter, Subaru SA will supply STI performance parts which we import from STI in Japan, however, these parts are not approved for normal road cars. In the brochure and the website, it specifically states that these are performance parts, and that the user should check with local authorities.
Subaru SA carries their own warranty, and therefore prohibits the use of non-standard parts not approved by us. This includes fitment of standard STI parts to something like a WRX as well.

If you are in any way unsure, I suggest that you get confirmation from the technical department at SSA through your dealership, in writing, to ensure that your warranty and maintenance plan is not negatively affected in any way.

  4. Hi again guys!

First of all, thank you for the replies. However, there seems to be a bit of a mix up here…
I am not looking for STI parts, I have an STI, all the performance parts available are already fitted to the car. I am looking for aftermarket parts to give my car that little extra “something”.
SPT parts are the only ones available that won’t compromise integrity (in writing, by Robert Hillary - SSA). This is why I am specifically looking for this brand.

    Silver:
I noticed the very same thing, the parts (SPT) are availalable through SSA, special order only, thus making the parts exorbitant and unpractical. The same part is available through the internet much cheaper. For instance, a double adjustable COBB short shifter kit costs about R3000, where an SPT shifter goes for around R5000…
I have taken a look at Prodrive, not really any viable performance gains there either, with the limited range of retail products available. Nothing else will fly with the warranty or service plan.

    Dawie:
Finally, the right person speaks up!
I read all of the terms and hoo ha on the sites, Subaru, SPT, STI, and also noticed the fine print you are talking about. These conditions are to keep crazy Ken Block type STI’s off the roads. :-D
As I mentioned above, the only parts I would like to install for now are an intake system and a short shifter. Neither of these items significantly alters performance, driveability or emisions, therefore, neither are subject to the “Off highway use only” clause.
Both of these parts have SSA part numbers and shows up on dealer stock systems, and like I said before, I already have the written Go Ahead from SSA.
The only problem is stock, and the damn exchange rate, as these items are specially ordered…

By the time I find some SPT parts, my car will probably be three years old already and out of service and warranty terms… LOL

Thank you for the help, I will keep this updated if I find something new and enlightening, please do the same if any of you do.

    Cheers guys, safe driving!
