The 2008 King of the Mountain hill-climb took place at the Gydo Pass near Ceres in the Western Cape on 29 and 30 November 2008. A variety of crazily fast cars took place in this year’s KOTM, and we were glad to see that there were a number of Subarus in the mix. Here are a couple of images of Subarus - mostly Impreza WRX STi models from various years - at the King of the Mountain 2008. Enjoy!

    Hi guys!

    REF: Post # 2. Above

This was an awesome event, I hadn’t heard of it before the initial post.
I went on to read about it and found out just how cool it is.

“IT’s A RACE AGAINST TIME - Gydo Pass, Ceres
For two days a year, the Gydo Pass becomes a challenge to those who have no fear, for the spectators a chance to see true motor racing ,exotic and simply mean machines driven in anger.
27 Turns, 6,5 km of sheer rock face on the one side and a serious drop off to nowhere on the other, set on the famous majestic Gydo pass.

Each driver has 3 timed runs, the fastest timed run secures the title “King of the Mountain.
A weekend of spectacular racing with road & rally racing cars partaking on the Saturday & the heavy metal machinery on the Sunday.” - http://www.kotm.co.za

This really sounds like something that could be enjoyed by both beginner driver and serious rally pro, you don’t have to be the fastest to have a go…
Unfortunately, this year was the last time the event took place (Rapport, 07/12/2008, Page 4).
Yes, that’s right; the story was on the front page of the Rapport newspaper. Tragically, two spectators were seriously injured in two separate accidents. Both accidents were made by Chevy Lumina’s.
In the first, the driver of his Lumina pickup lost control, after trying to avoid a collision with a spectator negligently crossing the road. He rolled his car, coming to a halt on top of another spectator, a young student. The young lady sustained major injuries to her pelvis and fractured her left foot in three places. She was immediately attended to by the onsite paramedic personnel.
In the second, another Lumina driver lost control and swerved into a wall. A young lady was inadvertently sitting on the wall when the pickup crashed into it. She lost her lower leg as a result of the collision.
The MSA has consequently removed the event from their calendar and will no longer support the event.
This was a very grim series of events, as it doesn’t only affect those injured here, but also all of the drivers seeking a controlled environment in which to enjoy the trills of motorsports. Negligent spectators, in this case, have caused an epic event to lose its popularity and support.

I hope that the event will be hosted again next year, even if it has to be without the support of the MSA. I would love to get a better understanding of what a rally feels like, if it’s gonna be held again, I’ll be there, sound-filled STI and all…

    Safe driving!

  5. Does anyone know who distracted Guzetti wich caused the crash? THE HOOD WHANT’S TOP PAY A VISIT

  6. Deprecated: Function split() is deprecated in /home/subaru/public_html/wp-content/plugins/google-analytics-for-wordpress/googleanalytics.php on line 481

    JC,
I assume that Guzetti was the driver of the black Chevy Lumina, involved in the accident as reported on in the Sunday paper last week, true?
    (06/12/2008 - http://www.news24.com/Rapport/Suid-Afrika/0,,752-2460_2438536,00.html)

The article only states that the driver’s break in consentration was caused by two spectators crossing the road.
Regardless of what caused the accident, it happened, “paying a visit” could in no way improve the situation for any of the affected…

By the way, the media are only concerned with the well being of the pedestrians injured in these accidents. The accidents affect the drivers just as much. How are the drivers doing? If anyone is acquainted with them, please let us know how they are doing.

    Safe Driving!
